The Security Engineering team is part of Technical Operations and Cyber Security within Virgin Money, and we maintain the Bank’s Security tools & applications. What you’ll be doing

  • As a Lead Cyber Engineer, you will take a proactive approach in using security engineering tools to identify and mitigate network & security risks. You will leverage an in-depth understanding of network protocols and vulnerabilities.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee security measures using specialised tools based on Cyber security best practices, ensuring robust protection against potential threats.
  • Collaborate closely and provide leadership to the wider team, project teams and other stakeholders to ensure that solutions align with the strategic needs of Virgin Money and drive the security agenda forward.
  • In addition, you will be a lead on the development of Network Detection and Response (NDR) initiatives, ensuring that emerging threats are swiftly identified and mitigated to safeguard our network integrity.
  • Lead the development and support of network segmentation capabilities, determining granular segmentation from a threat-led perspective, such as working with Cyber Threat Intelligence teams to map attack paths and build mitigations.
  • Oversee the rollout of new technologies and integrations with security tooling, ensuring they are effectively deployed and maintained.
  • Contribute significantly to the team culture and the ongoing evolution of security engineering practices, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Utilise automation to streamline processes and reduce repetitive tasks, enhancing overall efficiency and effectiveness in security operations.

We need you to have

  • Leadership experience with hands-on exposure and knowledge of cyber and network security, such as firewall security best practices, IPS, web gateways, network detection & response, etc
  • 5-7 years of experience in Cyber Engineering, ideally in a leadership role.
  • Experience with deploying Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD technologies, such as Terraform, Ansible and Azure DevOps.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud technologies (with a focus on security). For example, working with virtual networks, network security groups, virtual firewalling, web application firewalls, cloud networking security monitoring, Cloud security solutions.
  • Experience in the methodology & the applying of zero-trust principles to secure large-scale IT infrastructures, demonstrated by successful deployments within a corporate setting.
  • Proven ability to design/deploy zero-trust security solutions, including identity and access management, micro segmentation, and continuous authentication, in complex organisational structures would be an advantage.

It’s a bonus if you have but not essential

  • Experience as a Senior Cyber Security Engineer or Senior Network Engineer with an interest in becoming a Lead Cyber Security Engineer.
  • Cyber Security certifications (especially cloud centric) would be advantageous.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Javascript/Node.js, PowerShell or Bash.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and application monitoring, such as Icinga or Elastic Stack.
  • Leadership experience in working in a continuous delivery mindset and agile management.

If you're successful in securing a role with us, there are some checks you need to complete before starting. These include credit and criminal record checks and three years' worth of satisfactory references. If the role is part of the Senior Manager Regime and Certification Regime, it requires enhanced pre-employment checks – we'll ask for six years of regulatory references, and once in the role, you'll be subject to periodic employment checks.
